How to choose tile adhesive by format and substrate

What C1, C2, S1, S2, T, and E mean, when large-format mortar is needed, and why the substrate matters more than a marketing name.

Tile adhesive is not chosen by “the more expensive, the better”. It must match the tile, substrate, format, moisture, temperature, and installation method. That is why the classification and technical limitations on the bag matter more than a general label such as “tile glue”.

In the EN 12004 system, the markings describe useful properties. But the right class cannot compensate for a weak substrate, an incorrect mix, or adhesive that has skinned over.

1. How to read the package markings

C means cementitious adhesive, D a ready-mixed dispersion adhesive, and R a reaction-resin adhesive, commonly epoxy or polymer based. Number 1 is a normal class and 2 an improved class for adhesion. Additional letters describe properties: T reduced slip, E extended open time, and F rapid setting.

S1 and S2 describe deformability of cementitious adhesive, with S2 the more deformable class. This is not simply “stronger glue”; it describes the system’s ability to accommodate movement. Choose from the complete technical sheet.

  • C2 is an improved cementitious adhesive, not automatically S1.

2. Tile and format determine wetting requirements

Dense porcelain absorbs very little water, so use an adhesive that the manufacturer approves for porcelain. With large or heavy tile, non-sag performance on walls, open time, and consistent contact become especially important.

For large floor tile, use a mortar designed for large-format and heavy tile when specified. The method may require mortar on the substrate and a thin contact coat on the tile back, known as back-buttering. Follow the product instructions rather than assuming one universal trowel size.

  • Large format needs a flat substrate and controlled coverage.
  • Wall installations need appropriate anti-slip behaviour.
  • Thin slabs require a dedicated system and handling method.

3. The substrate matters more than the tile

Before adhesive, the substrate must be sound, clean, dust-free, and free from paint, weak layers, and unwanted moisture. Large deviations should be corrected with compatible materials first; adhesive is not automatically a levelling compound.

Concrete, cement screed, gypsum plaster, backer board, existing tile, waterproofing membranes, and timber-based sheets have different movement and absorption. Check primer, layer thickness, curing time, and compatibility for the actual surface.

4. Wet rooms, exterior work, and moving substrates

A shower or pool needs a complete system: prepared substrate, waterproofing, adhesive, grout, and movement joints. Exterior work adds freeze-thaw, temperature cycling, and protection against water entering below the tile.

Where a substrate can move, such as a heated floor or some board systems, a deformable S1 or S2 adhesive may be required if the project and manufacturer call for it. A higher class does not make every moving substrate suitable; movement still has to be controlled.

  • Waterproofing and adhesive are different parts of the system.
  • Check frost resistance and exterior approval.
  • Use compatible layers and movement joints on moving substrates.

5. When dispersion or reactive adhesive makes sense

Ready-mixed dispersion adhesives can be convenient for some interior wall work, particularly with smaller formats, but they have limits for moisture, substrate, tile size, and drying. Do not carry a backsplash solution into a shower or onto a floor without checking the instructions.

Reaction-resin adhesives, including epoxy products, are used where particular chemical or water-resistance properties are required. They are more expensive and less forgiving: pot life, cleaning, and application technique are critical. Glass mosaic may need a white adhesive so its colour does not change.

6. Installation technique still matters

Mix to the technical-sheet ratio, respect slaking time, and do not add water after the mix begins to set. Comb the adhesive in one direction, stay within open time, and periodically check that the ridges transfer to the tile back.

With large formats, wet areas, and exterior work, avoiding voids is especially important. Respect the product’s waiting time before grouting, loading, or first heating; the values depend on the adhesive, temperature, and substrate absorption.

  • Read the technical sheet, not just the front of the bag.
  • Do not mix by eye.
  • Control contact and open time.
  • Do not rush grouting or loading.

A quick selection formula

Give the supplier or installer five facts: tile material and size, wall or floor, interior or exterior, substrate type, and moisture or heating conditions. Then verify class, permitted format, layer thickness, coverage, and working time.

For slabs, natural stone, pools, façades, or moving substrates, do not rely on a generic shop recommendation. Use a system supported by the manufacturer’s documents and, for complex details, a qualified installer.
