How to plan a tile layout and explain it confidently to a client

A reliable workflow for capturing geometry, choosing visual axes, validating corners, and turning a 3D plan into a clear client decision.

A good layout is more than a level grid. It must account for the usual viewing angle, narrow edge pieces, grout lines through corners, and what happens around niches or fixtures.

Making those decisions before the first cut saves time, reduces rework, and gives a clear answer when a client asks why the layout starts where it does.

1. Start with geometry, not tile

Measure width and height at both edges, not at one convenient point. A few millimetres of difference can turn a clean rectangle into a visible wedge cut.

Record every opening, fixture, niche, and projection with its origin, dimensions, and depth. For connected walls, note the sequence and corner type.

  • Mark a reliable level baseline.
  • Use finished—not rough—dimensions.
  • Include adhesive, tile, and grout thickness.
  • Check diagonals where squareness matters.

2. Choose visual axes and priority edges

Not every wall needs a symmetric layout. Center the primary elevation when that creates a stronger view, while allowing a larger cut at a hidden corner. On long connected walls, grout continuity may matter more.

Compare at least an edge-start and a centered option. Review the top row, niche frame, and lines continuing onto adjacent surfaces—not only the first edge piece.

3. Validate difficult cuts before work begins

A cut schedule reveals narrow strips, but shaped cuts around openings need a visual check. Look for fragile bridges, cuts that are difficult to execute, and opening edges that nearly coincide with grout lines.

For niches and columns, inspect the front, back, and every return separately. A 45° mitre and an overlapping edge produce different usable strip widths.

  • Avoid narrow L-shaped remnants.
  • Review external corners and mitres separately.
  • Group identical pieces in the cut list.
  • Add the appropriate material allowance.

4. Explain decisions through consequences

Instead of saying one option is better, show two outcomes: where cuts land, how the central axis reads, and what happens at the corner. A visual comparison turns opinion into a concrete decision.

Save the agreed direction before installation. A 3D view and a few key dimensions give the installer, designer, and client a shared reference.

5. Pre-cut checklist

Cross-check the plan against the actual surface one more time. A 3D model supports decisions, but never replaces a site measurement or manufacturer requirements.

  • Surface dimensions and unevenness verified.
  • Visual axes and priority edges agreed.
  • Corner grout continuity checked.
  • Niches and openings use finished coordinates.
  • No critically narrow or fragile cuts remain.
  • The cut list matches the final plan.
